John,

First of all, forgive me for taking the easy way with terminology.
“Tower” has been misused for so long for any base site that not using it
confuses more people than using “base site” unconfuses.

My experience with antennasearch has been very disappointing.
They are wrong more than half the time about tower locations. Their errors fall into several categories.

1. Either Google or they can’t seem to place really existing towers very close to where they are.

2. They list towers based on permission granted
and never check to see if they were built ? only about half are, on average.

3. Built towers are never checked to see if they were dismantled; and many are.

4. Far too many times they give the wrong service providers
when they have the tower location approximately right.

5. There seem to be other “ghost” towers
that are listed but don’t exist for reasons I have not been able to trace.

6. Even when you know some of the alter egos used by providers and tower builders, you may go looking for a “cell tower” and find something quite different; these people list anything that radiates.

Speaking of radiation, that seems to explain why never built, dismantled and non-existent towers are listed, Antenna Search’s agenda (just read their website comments) is to stop tower construction. Their motivation seems to be an unwarranted fear of radiation from them.

So the more towers they can deliver in a given location, the more they can scare people into protesting the construction of more towers.

There was a time when the FCC required the exact location of every tower to be filed with them.
The lobbyists seem to have eliminated most of that!

I wasted a lot of my time, gas, and rubber chasing after their non-existent or mislabeled towers until I wised up; no more!

I hope you will remove this unreliable source from your site
and spare others the time and money they will waste.

Please let me know of any new sources.

Henry Hudgins

Good morning - found your website while searching for cell tower maps - it is very comprehensive. I saw that you had included a map from my website Steel In The Air. Thank you for doing so - I appreciate any mention of my mapping. You can include a link back to my webpage where you found the map so that your visitors can find my site.

Tower Maps is the most comprehensive, current and complete wireless tower and rooftop site information GIS database with over 225,000 co-location sites, compiled from over 275 site owners and managers in the US and Canada. As of 2001: Tower Maps uses the data it compiles from the FCC and 230 individual tower companies to track competition among tower companies and to help locate existing sites for site acquisition companies. According to recent Tower Map research, there are 110,000 monopoles, lattice, self-support and guyed towers in the United States. In addition, Tower Maps estimates there are 20,000 rooftop antenna sites and 60,000 billboard sites.

Tower Map Forum Comment:

You wont see the vast majority of cell sites. These companys really do not want you to know where their towers are. That would be "informing" the customer. You would know right where they offer coverage. And none of the wireless carriers want you to know this. Because that would affect your decision on wich carrier you choose. Thats why their "coverage" maps are actually"rate area maps," just read the fine print at the bottom of the page.

T-Mobile
seems to be the most honest when it comes to showing coverage. The maps that you can get from them from the stores really show where the good and bad coverage areas are.

Sprint
is good too in showing where the towers are located. However, you can't get a great estimate on how the service coverage is. You can only estimate how the service is going to be since some towers cover 1/2 mile, and others 20 miles

The problem lies in both the cell companies and their advertising and in the uninformed belief by cellular phone users that phone service CAN be ubiquitous.

The only thing that many of the users on this forum should be saying is that the maps do or do not represent service well in their particular area. Global statements such as T-Mobile's maps are good or bad are inaccurate. And to further complicate matters, cell phone coverage is a constantly moving target depending upon capacity and weather and foiliage.

The cell phone companies in the past have certainly been to blame for this as well.

Verizon
used to draw 8 mile circles around every tower they owned and called that a coverage map. Clearly, this was misleading and worthless.

Most of the tower companies like

Crown Castle,
American Tower,
SBA, etc

own and list all their towers which most carriers use, but remember alot of cell sites are not own towers but are located on roof tops, watertanks, transmission line towers or even stealth structures.

When it comes down to it I dont care where the towers are because the tower I use is about 100 feet from it and is very nice.

My grandparents actually have a tower on their property I wont say which carrier it is but it is a larger one. It has been there about 5 years now.

National Coverage Plans/Maps

Now Verizon:
Air Touch Cellular, Bell Atlantic Mobile, GTE Wireless and PrimeCo

AT&T with their AT&T Digital One Rate and Verizon with their SingleRate Coverage have the largest networks. They are made up of both Digital and Analog Networks so a dual band, dual mode phone is needed to make use of their National Networks.

Sprint PCS with their PCS National Coverage uses only their Digital network. If you have have a dual band, dual mode phone and switch to Analog you will be paying roaming and possibly long distant fees for that service.

Like Sprint, VoiceStream uses a Digital only network. Theirs is using the GSM network. Some of their phones are also capable of using the Analog network and like Sprint, you will be paying roaming and possibly long distant fees for that service on others networks.

The Cingular, Alltel and Qwest National Networks use other carriers service where they do not have coverage. They have reciprocal agreements with other services which allow their customers to use another network without any roaming fees to the user.

USA Coverage Map
A GOOD SITE LISTING WIRELESS COVERAGE MAPS WORLDWIDE

This a very good website that offers wireless coverage maps related to the GSM network. Those of you who use Voicestream, Cingular, and AT&T Wireless may find the website to be interesting enough. International travelers should find it useful and the rest of us can consider it a crystal ball for the future of the US GSM wireless network.

The website is well-designed, easy to navigate, and even offers coverage maps for satellite subscribers such as Iridium and Teledesic. It looks like they are very open to doing a link exchange with related websites for those of you who would have an interest in doing something like that.

A very nice link that they have listed is the carrier database. A very comprehensive listing with contact information for carriers from all across the world. It comes complete with notes about carriers if applicable. In total, there must be well over a hundred carriers listed who have some type of involvement in the wireless industry.

If you find the website to be a useful resource, don't forget to sign up for their mailing list which will automatically notify you of any updates and changes to their website. Many of the links from their website lead to other useful resources. You can find them by the following this link:

Very Useful:
TowerSource -- $250 per year
Hello Antenna Guy:

I came across your web site and saw you mentioned Berkana (a fine site, don't get me wrong) but it only shows half the sites in the market and has limited search options. At Fryer's we've been compiling site data for over 12 years and have the most comprehensive database in the buisness. I just recently sent out a free trial offer (see below) and thought you might like to check it out. Let me know if you have any questions.

$250 a year

More and more carriers and government agencies are finding sites through TowerSource, the nation's largest database of tower and rooftop sites.

TowerSource
includes the entire FCC file (and so matches Berkana and the ASR database) but also includes sites from the major tower companies, the middle tier companies and the mom and pops... all homogenized into one 250,000 record file.

TowerSource
gives you tower sites and rooftops under 200 feet (not found on Berkana or the FCC online database) in addition to water tower sites utility sites and billboards.

We have been collecting and refining this data for over 12 years and were twice named the "Best On-Line Site Location Tool" at the Tower Summit conference.

Berkana Wireless Radio Tower Locator
This site will display maps of any wireless radio tower in the USA that is registered with the FCC. You can enter information into one or more of the following text entry boxes then press the find button. The state and city must match exactly if entered but the company can be a partial company name. The wildcard character is the percent sign (%). For example you can enter MN for the state and st% for the city and you'll get all cities in Minnesota that start with st! The nearby matches link will find towers that are within approximately 10, 20, 50, 100 miles of that particular tower.
